Bulldogs Record 6-1 Victory over Boston University, Defeat Fairfield 7-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's tennis team pulled double duty on Sunday in its last set of matches before the start of the Ivy League season. Playing at home on Sunday, the Bulldogs logged a comprehensive performance, defeating Boston University 6-1 and then sweeping Fairfield 7-0. Eight different members of the Yale squad recorded at least one win.
Against Boston University, Yale began in near perfect fashion. Freshman Valerie Shklover and senior captain Hanna Yu recorded a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and the junior duo of Madeleine Hamilton and Ree Ree Li secured the doubles point with a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Bulldogs never looked back, claiming five additional wins in singles play. Shklover overcame Boston University's Iris Lin at the No. 5 spot, and sophomore Caroline Lynch put Yale within one point of victory with her 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 6 position. Hamilton clinched Yale's fifth win of the season at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win of her own. Yu further extended Yale's margin of victory by claiming a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles, and Ree Ree Li battled past Iryna Kostirko in the day's most competitive affair, 7-6(6), 3-6, 1-0(7).
Despite transitioning quickly into their second match of the day, the Bulldogs did not show any signs of fatigue and used their momentum effectively. In doubles play against Fairfield, all three pairs completed wins, with the tandems of Hamilton and Ree Ree Li and Shklover and Yu earning their second doubles victories of the day.
In singles, freshman Carol Finke impressed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Helen Abbot. Freshman Elizabeth Zordani backed up her classmate by defeating Kaila Nelson with the loss of only one game. This time around, Lynch clinched the Bulldog win with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles. Hamilton, Ree Ree Li and freshman Sunday Swett all overcame their respective opponents to ensure Yale's second 7-0 win of the season.
Full results from Sunday's matches can be found below.
The Bulldogs will have little time to savor their double victory, as the Ivy League season kicks off this coming weekend with matches against Penn and No. 58 Princeton.
