Svenning, Lu post gritty third-set victories; Doehler wins again
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Heading into this year's Invitational at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, the Yale men's tennis team knew it would have to be focused in order to put together two solid days of tennis. The Bulldogs certainly got off to a good start on Saturday, starting the day with a 6 -1 victory over Stony Brook, improving their home record this year to six wins and one loss.
Starting doubles first, the Elis posted three comfortable 6 – 3 victories and entered the singles round with a point advantage. In singles competition, Stony Brook's Alexandre Felisa clinched the opposition's only point of the day with a victory in the #3 position. The Stony Brook squad had no answers for Yale's strong play in the #4, #5, and #6 positions, however, with Yale freshman Stefan Doehler, sophomore Photos Photiades, and junior Jason Brown winning in straight-set matches.
Yale showed real grit to finish off the match with two hard fought three set victories from junior Martin Svenning and freshman Ziqi Wang, playing in the #1 and #2 singles positions, respectively. Though both players lost a close first set, they managed to elevate their play and bounce back to take the next two sets against tough competition.
Scores for the victory over Stony Brook are shown below. The full results of the match against Marist will be posted tomorrow, although the Bulldogs began well on Saturday afternoon by going 6 - 2 in the initial round of singles.
