Gomez Sanchez The Difference As Temple Edges Yale 2-0

Box Score

Owls Remain Undefeated With Victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – If there was an early-season award for the most improved team in the nation, Temple would be a strong candidate. Yale would certainly vouch for the Owls.

Temple, ranked third in the East Region, remained undefeated with a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs at Ambler Field.

The Owls are now 4-0-1 on the season.

Statistically, the game was evenly played. The Owls had only a 10-8 edge in shots and each team had three corner kicks.

The difference was striker Jorge Gomez Sanchez, who scored both goals in the first half.

"I thought we played well for about 75 minutes today against a good Temple team that is undefeated for a reason," said Kylie Stannard, The 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "They are playing with a lot of confidence and a have lethal striker up top. Unfortunately, we continue to make mistakes in critical areas of the field and must do a better job of staying focused and putting in a full 90 minute performance. The guys are absolutely doing the physical work, but now the mental focus and technical execution needs to come together."

Gomez Sanchez's first goal came when he finished a beautiful cross from Matt Mahoney at 29:24. He struck again 11 minutes later, working his way up field and firing a shot that deflected off a Yale defender and in.

The Bulldogs managed six shots in the second half, but couldn't solve Temple goalkeeper Alex Cagle, who earned her third career shutout.

Yale was coming off a hard-fought 2-0 loss to 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday.

"Today was another incredible physical effort after having played a tough game on Friday night with Temple having five days without a game to prepare for us," Stannard said "Right now, we are more focused on the process and making improvements each game while trying to see which guys have the mentality and execution that is needed to win at this level.

"While the results don't always tell the full story, we absolutely made positive steps this weekend and I'm happy with the effort."

The Bulldogs are off until next Saturday when they host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
