Yale Upsets No. 69 Penn 4-3 in Opening Match of Ivy Season

 

Bulldogs Win Four Singles Matches to Seal Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -  Yale kicked off the Ivy season on a strong note, upsetting No. 69 Penn with a 4-3 win. The Bulldogs dominated at singles, winning in the top four spots to secure the important, first win of the Ivy season.

Although Penn secured the doubles point to gain an early upper hand, Yale charged back in the singles match-ups. At No. 1 singles, senior Madeleine Hamilton defeated Kana Daniel in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, extending her impressive record against the Quakers. This victory marks her third win out of four matches against Penn. Meanwhile, senior captain Ree Ree Li preserved her perfect record against Penn by winning 6-2, 7-6(6) against Ria Vaidya in the No. 3 spot. Junior Tina Jiang also contributed to Yale's four points with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Sonya Latycheva at No. 2 singles. Finally, junior Sherry Li fought through a three-set match in the No. 4 spot to mark her third straight win. Li took the first set 6-3, but Lina Qostal came back to win 6-2 in the second. Li and Qostal were neck-to-neck throughout much of the third set, but Li claimed the set winning 7-5 in the tiebreak for a final score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5).

The Bulldogs will hope to continue their early success in the Ivy league on Saturday against Princeton at 2:00 p.m.
