No. 5 Columbia Takes No. 2 Yale in Upset

NEW YORK — The No. 2 Yale men's squash team came up short Sunday against No. 5 Columbia in a match that featured quality squash from every court. The loss comes as a blow after the team's triumphant win over Cornell on Saturday, but speaks to the high level of play that the Bulldogs will face within the Ivy League.

The bottom end of Yale's lineup showed exemplary skill with No. 7 Arjun Kochhar and No. 9 Calvin McCafferty both netting wins for the Bulldogs. McCafferty, a freshman, showed particular zeal on the court and was able to pull off an impressive win despite losing in games one and four.

Juniors Pierson Broadwater and Max Martin competed in close matches that kept the Bulldogs dialed in throughout the competition. Martin opened with two wins in the No. 5 spot over competitor Adham Madi, but was overcome throughout five tight games.

The team's focus remains on the matches to come; by the end of the week, the Yale men will have played each of the top five teams in the country.

The team is aiming to bounce back quickly with matches against No. 1 Trinity and No. 8 St. Lawrence later this week.

The Bulldogs' next chance to show their ability is Wednesday, Jan. 18, when they play Trinity College in Hartford starting at 6 p.m.
