Early Second-Half Goal Lifts Cal Over Yale

Box Score

Bulldogs Hang Tough With Pac-12 Bears

Jose Carerra-Garcia has spent much of the early season setting up his Cal teammates for goals. Friday against Yale, Carerra-Garcia picked an opportune time to tally his first goal, scoring the only goal of the game early in the second half to lift the Bears to a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs in Berkeley.

After a scoreless first half, Carerra-Garcia, who entered the night with a team-best three assists, got Cal on the board when he did some nifty dribbling through traffic and fired a shot into the corner from near the top of the box.

That was enough for goalkeeper Drake Callender and a Cal defense that has yielded only five goals on the season. Callendar, who was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after stopping nine shots in a 2-1 win at Portland, made three saves against the Bulldogs.

Yale had opportunities in the final minutes. Kyle Kenagy was denied by Callender with just under five minutes left, and the Bulldogs had a corner kick with a little over two minutes remaining but couldn't convert.

The game aired live on the Pac-12 television network.

Yale will remain in Northern California and play at Stanford on Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT. That game also will be shown on the Pac-12 Network.
