Oni Scores 18 Points To Pace Bulldogs

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Yale ran into a talented offensive team on top of its game Wednesday night. One player in particular stood out. Anthony Lamb scored 34 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four blocks to lift Vermont to a 79-70 victory over the Bulldogs before a loud near capacity crowd at Patrick Gym.

The Catamounts, the defending America East regular season champion, made 13 three-pointers and moved the ball with precision. The catalyst was Lamb, who was 13-of-24 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range. His 34 points and six three-pointers were both career highs.

Stef Smith added 17 points and Ernie Duncan scored 15 for UVM (3-2).

Yale was led by Miye Oni, who posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Bruner had 14 points, first year Isaiah Kelly scored 13 and Alex Copeland added 11. Bruner also had six assists.

The Bulldogs (1-2) had the lead for much of the first half, but Vermont closed with a 9-2 run and led 40-37 at the intermission.

The Catamounts kept it going to start the second half, opening with a 16-4 run, capped by a Smith three-pointer, to seize control.

Vermont, an experienced the team that has been to the postseason in each of the last 10 years, committed only six turnovers.

The Bulldogs now have six days off before traveling to Bryant next Wednesday. The break comes at a good time for Yale, which opened the season with a long trip to China that was followed by a double overtime contest at Memphis.

NOTES: The game was a homecoming for Yale assistant coach Tobe Carberry, who is a 2000 graduate of Vermont where he enjoyed a standout career for the Catamounts. He ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,235 points and ranked in the top 10 in games played, field goals, assists, steals and blocked shots at the conclusion of his career. Carberry, who was coaching against his alma mater in Burlington for the first time, caught up with a number old friends before the game and received a nice ovation from the big crowd in the pre-game introductions… The Bulldogs were without Trey Phills (injury) and Eric Monroe (illness)… Tip for next Wednesday's game at Bryant is set for 7 p.m.
