NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A pattern of close losses to top teams continued for the Yale field hockey team Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field as No. 24 Cornell edged the Bulldogs 2-1. This was Yale's fifth straight one-goal loss and the fifth time this season the Bulldogs have been within one goal of a nationally ranked team in the second half of a game only to lose.
After falling behind early in the second quarter Yale (2-8, 0-3 Ivy League) tied the game when junior forward/midfielder
Olivia Levieux followed up her own shot on a corner, knocking in her fifth goal of the season.
Levieux now has more goals this year (five) than in her two previous seasons combined (four).
"She's been producing for us well, and is someone we can rely on," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey.
That was part of a solid all-around day for Yale's corner unit. The Bulldogs also had two corner goals called back due to infractions.
"We executed our corners very well, especially with their fast fly," said Stuper. "We got good looks and good opportunities. Unfortunately, we also got called for screening and people getting tripped up."
Cornell (6-2, 2-1 Ivy League) took advantage of a corner right before the end of the third quarter to go up 2-1, then held on for the win. This was the Big Red's fourth win in the last five games.
Junior goalkeeper
Sydney Terroso finished with six saves.
