ALUMS WELCOMED BACK; MIFFLIN TO BE HONORED
This is Alums Weekend for the Yale Field Hockey program, highlighted by a halftime ceremony at Saturday's game in which all alums will be acknowledged. The Bulldogs will also recognize
Lawrie Mifflin '73. She is one of five recipients of the George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award, which honors alumni athletes who, in their lives after Yale, have made significant leadership contributions in their worlds of governance, commerce, science and technology, education, public service, and the arts and media.
Mifflin, the first woman sports reporter at the New York Daily News, is best known for her long career (1982-2013) with the New York Times, mostly as senior editor.
As an undergraduate Mifflin was co-founder of the field hockey team and later its co-captain with
Sandy Morse '74. She will be honored at Yale's Blue Leadership Ball on Nov. 22 at the William K. Lanman Center inside Payne Whitney Gym.
Saturday's ceremony is part of a larger celebration at Yale this year, as the university celebrates the anniversaries of the of the first women students at Yale. That includes the 50th anniversary of coeducation at Yale College and the 150th anniversary of the first graduate women on campus. Yale teams are wearing special "Lux et Femina" patches as part of the "50WomenAtYale150" celebration, which includes lectures, exhibitions, and performances throughout the 2019-20 academic year.
