Bulldogs Advance To NIT Season Tip-Off Orlando Bracket Championship Game

Yale Rolls To 73-51 Win Over Western Michigan

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – There was no late game drama at Disney World. Azar Swain led four Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points as Yale rolled to a convincing 73-51 victory over Western Michigan in the NIT Season Tip-Off at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.

Jordan Bruner added 14 points and 13 rebounds, his fifth career double-double, Paul Atkinson had 13 points and Matthue Cotton contributed 12 points off the bench.

Yale held the Broncos to 29.6 percent shooting from the field and more than 30 points below their season scoring average. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, made 13 three-pointers and had 14 assists.

"I thought we did a great job of sharing the ball on offense, but our biggest thing was defensively we were great at being where we are supposed to be, getting stops and playing together," said James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "If we are not turning the ball over, and if we get back in transition, we are pretty hard to score on."

Yale, which has already played three overtime games and had two others decided in the final minutes, raced out to an early 12-5 lead. The advantage grew to 42-27 at halftime.

Western Michigan (4-3) never got closer than 11 in the second half.

Jalen Gabbidon scored six points on a pair of big three-pointers in the second half and also helped limit Michael Flowers, Western Michigan's leading scorer, to just 4-of-16 shooting from the field.

Eric Monroe was the facilitator of the offense. He finished with a career-high eight assists.

In all, 11 different Bulldogs scored.

"We've always had a balanced team the whole time I've been here," said Bruner, who was 5-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. "You never know who is going to score, and we try to put each other in good positions to put the ball in the hoop."

Yale's ball movement was terrific throughout the game.

The Bulldogs, who have won two of their last three games, recovered well from Saturday's heartbreaking two-point loss at Penn State.

"We learned from that and kept [Western Michigan] from going on any runs [in the second half]," Bruner said.

Yale meets Bucknell in the NIT Season Tip-Off Orlando Bracket Championship on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Bison edged Seattle 77-70 in the second game of the day. ESPNU will televise the title game.

Following Tuesday's game, the Bulldogs are back home to host Vermont on Sunday. Tipoff at Lee Amphitheater is slated for 3 p.m.
