LOS ANGELES – No. 11 UCLA proved to be as good as advertised Tuesday night, topping the Yale women's basketball team 100-65. The Bruins -- the highest-ranked opponent on a Yale schedule that includes six games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year -- shot 55 percent from the field en route to the win. Yale's 65 points, including a team-high 22 from junior guard
Ellen Margaret Andrews, represent the most UCLA has allowed this season.
Yale (3-2, 0-0 Ivy League) was buoyed in the early going by a large crowd of Bulldog fans at historic Pauley Pavilion. Some of the loudest cheers of the night were for senior guard
Roxy Barahman, playing just 30 miles from her home town of Calabasas. Her layup at two-and-a-half minutes into the game -- the first of her 13 points on the night -- got Yale within 8-7. UCLA answered with a 6-0 run, though, and continued steadily building the lead from there.
A free throw by sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo (part of a 13 point, six rebound night for her) got Yale within 17-12 with 4:07 left in the first, but UCLA (5-0, 0-0 Pac-12) once again responded with a run. The Bruins outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 to end the quarter, taking a 29-14 lead into the first break.
UCLA outscored Yale 23-12 in the second quarter, limiting the Bulldogs to a 3-for-11 shooting performance. Yale got no closer than within 22 in the third quarter, and the Bruins' lead eventually grew as big as 39 in the fourth before a pair of Barahman free throws and a driving layup by senior forward
Bronwyn Davies made the final 100-65.
"We're going back to the lab to figure out where our defensive deficiencies were," said
Allison Guth, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We had a better second half. We played them to an eight-point quarter in the third and a one-point quarter in the fourth."
Andrews' 22 points represent a career high. She is the third Bulldog to crack the 20 point barrier this season, joining Barahman and junior guard
Tori Andrew.
Guard Japreece Dean had a triple-double for UCLA with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Yale remains in California until Saturday night, playing Fresno State and LMU at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic later this week.
