NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team completed an unbeaten weekend with a decisive 8-1 win vs. Merrimack Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field, getting goals from five different players. Combined with Friday's 4-3 overtime win at Columbia, Sunday's win gives the Bulldogs their second 2-0 weekend in the last three weeks. They have won four of their last five games.
Yale (6-10, 2-4 Ivy League) put this game out of reach early, scoring five times in the first quarter. Senior midfielder
Bridget Condie got the scoring started en route to a five-point day (2-1-5) for her. Within six minutes of her goal the Bulldogs scored four more, getting a pair from sophomore forward/midfielder
Kelly Dolan and one each from junior forward/midfielder
Imogen Davies and sophomore midfielder
Théodora Dillman.
"In the first quarter we came out really strong," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "We were aggressive both on attack and on defense, and we finished."
Merrimack (2-15, 1-5 NEC) then settled in thanks in large part to goalkeeper Katharina Ohmen, who finished with 17 saves. But after scoreless second and third quarters, Yale tacked on three goals in the final frame. Condie once again got things started with a goal, and three minutes after Condie's goal first year forward
Lena Ansari set up junior midfielder
Iliana Cabral to make it 7-0. Assisted by Dolan, Dillman scored again at 59:22 for Yale's final goal.
Six different players finished with at least one point for Yale, and the eight-goal output was the Bulldogs' best since scoring eight against Holy Cross Oct. 30, 2011. Condie now has a team-best 10 goals and 25 points, both career highs.
"
Bridget Condie was very effective on attack, and
Lena Ansari did a great job as well," said Stuper. "It was also great to get some less-experienced players some time on the field."
Junior goalkeeper
Sydney Terroso made one save for Yale in the first half and then gave way to first year
Luanna Summer, who made three saves in the second half.
Yale concludes its season Saturday, hosting Brown at 1:00 p.m.
