Bulldogs Take on North Carolina Saturday

Homecoming for Cary's Gallagher

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After an eight-day break for the holidays, the Yale women's basketball team heads to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels Saturday (1:00 p.m., ACC Network Extra, Tune In (Audio)).

Last Game
Yale (7-3, 0-0 Ivy League) beat Sacred Heart 87-40 in its last game. That was the Bulldogs' largest margin of victory since an 82-30 win vs. St. Bonaventure Dec. 5, 1981. Yale held SHU to 24.6% shooting, outrebounded the Pioneers 50-28 and committed only 12 turnovers while registering 19 assists. Sophomore forward Camilla Emsbo (Lakewood, Colo.) led Yale with 23 points and nine rebounds. She was named Ivy League Player of the Week for her efforts.

EM Keeps Setting Personal Bests
Junior forward Ellen Margaret Andrews (Dallas, Texas) had a career-high seven assists in the 87-40 win vs. Sacred Heart Dec. 19. Earlier this year Andrews set her career high in points (23 in the win vs. Providence that ended Dec. 3) and her career high in steals (six in the win vs. Fresno State at LMU Nov. 29).

A Game of Firsts
Yale's win vs. Sacred Heart saw two sophomores -- forward Erin Hill (Edgartown, Mass.) and guard Roxanne Nesbitt (Chicago, Ill.) -- score their first points of the season. For Nesbitt, those were the first points of her career.

Improved Accuracy
Yale is shooting 44.4% from the field this season, a big improvement over last season (39.2%). The last time the Bulldogs finished a season shooting better than their current rate was 1986-87, when they shot 45.1%.

Barahman Reaches Double Digits Again
With 11 points in just 18 minutes in Yale's last game, senior guard Roxy Barahman (Calabasas, Calif.) kept alive her streak of scoring double digits. The streak has now reached 12 games, dating back to last season. The last time she was held to fewer than 10 points was Mar. 2, 2019, when she scored nine in a 67-54 win at Columbia. For her career Barahman has 1,210 points -- 12th all-time at Yale, 16 points away from Sarah Halejian '15 in 11th.

Final Road Trip of 2019
This is the Bulldogs' last road game of the year, and their final non-league road game. They have won four of their last five away from Lee Amphitheater, including taking two of three on their trip to California in November.

Carolina Bulldog
The trip to North Carolina marks a homecoming for sophomore guard Robin Gallagher (Cary, N.C.). Gallagher was Southwest Wake Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and a two-time first team all-conference for Athens Drive Magnet High School in Raleigh. She was a three-time team captain and two-time team MVP. She also was a member of Teen CORE, an organization committed to teen service in her neighborhood.

Scouting North Carolina
North Carolina (9-1, 0-0 ACC) has scored 80 or more points seven times this season. Five Tar Heels are averaging double digits in scoring, led by six-foot-four center Janelle Bailey (15.7 points per game). Three of those top five scorers are six-foot-two or taller.

Yale and UNC last met Nov. 22, 2015, with the Tar Heels taking a 70-63 win. Nyasha Sarju '16 led Yale with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Tar Heels are coached by Courtney Banghart, who coached at Princeton from 2007-08 through 2018-19 and led the Tigers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and seven Ivy League titles.
