No. 6 Virginia Holds Off Bulldogs, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- For the second day in a row Sunday, the Yale field hockey team battled one of the top teams in the country to within a goal late in the second half. But just like No. 16 Liberty on Saturday, on Sunday No. 6 Virginia had just enough to outlast the Bulldogs. The Cavaliers broke open a 1-0 game with two fourth-quarter goals to claim a 3-0 win.

Virginia (5-1, 0-0 ACC) had lost to No. 4 Maryland on Friday but scored twice on its four penalty corners in that game. Corners also proved decisive on Sunday, as the Cavaliers scored on one at 22:33 to take the early lead, then again on one at 47:38. The only goal Yale allowed from the field came with just over five minutes to play, making the final 3-0.

"We were really pleased with how we were playing," said Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "Unfortunately we didn't execute on our corners, and they did on theirs. That's the difference right there. We played four solid quarters."

Yale (1-3, 0-0 Ivy League) got five saves from junior goalkeeper Sydney Terroso and a defensive save from senior back Holly Jackson to help keep the Cavaliers at bay for much of the afternoon. Stuper also credited sophomore midfielder Théodora Dillman for excellent work in the midfield.

Yale next plays at Wagner Friday.
