NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A day after nearly upsetting No. 16 Harvard, the Yale field hockey team suffered another 2-1 defeat Sunday afternoon -- this one at Hofstra. The Bulldogs took an early lead on a corner goal by senior midfielder
Bridget Condie, but the Pride rallied behind a pair of third-quarter goals for the win.
After a scoreless first, Yale (2-5, 0-1 Ivy League) went ahead when junior midfielder
Sarah King took the insert from junior forward/midfielder
Imogen Davies and passed it to Condie, who drilled home her second goal of the season.
"That's a corner we can rely on, and it was well-executed," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey.
With Hofstra (4-5, 0-0 CAA) limited to two shots in the first half, the Bulldogs went into halftime up 1-0. The Pride turned the tide in the third quarter, though, scoring twice on four shots.
Yale's last good chance to tie the game came on a corner with six minutes left. But after King's shot was blocked, Hofstra goalie Merlijn van der Vegt turned aside a shot by sophomore midfielder
Alissa Wong.
The loss obscured another solid day of play in the midfield for the Bulldogs.
"[Sophomore midfielder]
Theodora [Dillman] and Imogen put together impressive back-to-back games," said Stuper. "After all the work they put in yesterday in the Harvard game, they came back today and did the same thing. Also,
Sarah King did some nice things to help us start to generate attack on the left side."
This was Hofstra's fourth win in five games.
Yale plays at No. 10 Princeton next, visiting the Tigers for a 5:00 p.m. game next Friday.
