NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team got eight points from first year midfielder
Ana Dieroff and five from junior midfielder
Olivia Markert en route to a 16-12 win vs. La Salle in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 40-25 shot advantage and got nine saves from junior goalkeeper
Amelia Drake.
Yale (1-0, 0-0 Ivy League) opened with a 5-0 run that included three goals by Markert. The Bulldogs also benefited from five draw control wins -- by three different first-year players, midfielder
Bri Carrasquillo (two), midfielder
JoJo Gum (two) and midfielder
Anna Vetsch -- in the first eight minutes to help control the tempo.
La Salle (0-2, 0-0 A-10) then chipped away at the lead gradually, getting within three twice, but the Bulldogs had an answer each time. With the score 10-7 in the second Yale reeled off three straight goals -- including a spectacular, behind-the-back tally by junior attacker
Isabelle Webster. Drake also had a key save in that span, denying a La Salle free position attempt. And when the Explorers got within 13-10 Yale scored three of the next four to put the game out of reach. That included the fifth of the day for Markert, tying her career high.
In addition to Dieroff (5-3-8) and Markert (5-0-5), Yale also got multiple-point outings from Webster (2-0-2), sophomore midfielder
Payton Vaughn (2-1-3) and sophomore attacker
Olivia Penoyer (2-0-2). Penoyer added a team-high three ground balls and Vaughn had a pair of caused turnovers.
Carrasquillo, one of two first years (along with Vetsch) to earn a start in the season opener, had a game-high 10 draw controls and helped the Bulldogs to a 19-10 advantage in that category. That was the most draws in a game for Yale since also getting 19 in a 17-11 win vs. UConn Apr. 10.
Prior to Dieroff, the last Yale first year to crack the eight-point mark was Penoyer, who had eight against Columbia last Apr. 13.
Yale, which has now won two of its last three season openers, hosts Albany next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
