NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs scored all four goals in the third period, including a pair by
Curtis Hall, to erase a 1-0 deficit on the way to a 4-1 win over Union in game two of the ECAC Hockey playoff best-of-three series. The Yale victory forces a deciding contest on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The Elis broke through 62 seconds into the third period on an odd-man rush.
Kevin O'Neil raced down the left side with a teammate keeping pace on the right. The junior center held until a defender slid past him, at the top of the slot, and then fired stick side on Union goalie Darion Hanson.
Yale made it two tallies in 61 seconds when Hall fired a shot stick side from the low slot that ended up the game-winner. The Boston Bruins' draft pick then notched one for the highlight reel after taking a lead pass from
Cole Donhauser, deking a defenseman at the top of the left circle and then sliding the puck past Hanson's stick with 4:35 left.
Defenseman
Phil Kemp put the game away with a power-play snap shot from the top of the circle.
The Bulldogs took a while to get going tonight, and they needed plenty of great play from senior goalie
Corbin Kaczperski, who had 22 saves and stopped all four Dutchmen advantages.
After a penalty-free first period, the whistles started blowing in the second and both teams had 5-on-3 opportunities. Kaczperski made a few top-notch stops including a glove save while sitting on the ice.
After having 23 shots blocked in a 3-0 loss Friday, the Elis only had 13 knocked aside tonight, which was noticed by
Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach.
"You can't just throw your hands up and say they're good at blocking shots so they're going to block shots, you have to find a way to get them through. And that's what we did," Allain said.
"I told them they have to be mentally tough enough to stick to the plan. What we were doing was working, it wasn't working on the scoreboard but it was working. Sometimes you have to fight human nature to want to get down. We stuck to the plan and were rewarded."
