SAN FRANCISCO –The San Francisco 49ers announced the promotion of
Mike McDaniel '05 to offensive coordinator for the 2021 National Football League (NFL) season. McDaniel starts his fifth year with the 49ers after serving as the team's run game coordinator (2018-2020) and run game specialist (2017).
A wide receiver during his time with Elis, McDaniel has turned San Francisco's running backs into one of the top units in the league. The 49ers averaged 131.1 yards on the ground per game over the past two seasons, ranking sixth in the NFL. Additionally, the ground game racked up 42 touchdowns, the third-most in the NFL, and an appearance in the 2020 Super Bowl.
McDaniel joined San Francisco in 2017 after two seasons as an offensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons. He also spent one season as the wide receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2014. Prior to the Browns, McDaniel spent three seasons in Washington where he started as an offensive assistant before being promoted to wide receivers coach in 2013.
The Greenly, Colo., native got his start with the Denver Broncos in 2005 as an intern before spending three years (2006-08) with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant.
McDaniel also coached in the United Football League for two seasons (2009-10) as the running backs coach for the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
The Yale history major has been to two of the last four Super Bowls (2017 – Atlanta Falcons).
McDaniel now joins fellow coordinator Patrick Graham, defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, as Yale has built an impressive list of representation in the NFL.
