NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale field hockey team has shown an ability to finish strong lately, pulling out two straight wins on a pair of fourth-quarter goals. The latest came Wednesday night at Johnson Field. First-year forward
Lily Ramsey was the hero again this time, as her tally at 53:40 broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-2 victory vs. Sacred Heart.
Â
Ramsey has now scored her first two career goals in the last two games, and both have been fourth-quarter game-winners. The first came last Friday in a 4-2 win at Columbia. Wednesday's came after Sacred Heart (2-12, 2-2 NEC) had rallied to tie the game with two goals in a span of less than seven minutes from late in the third quarter until early in the fourth.
Â
"We let the third quarter get away from us and weren't playing our game," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "But
Lily Ramsey had a timely goal that lifted up the team."
Â
Yale (6-7, 2-2 Ivy League) had four corners and seven shots in the first quarter but was unable to slip one past SHU goalie Erin Burgess, who made six saves in that quarter alone. The Bulldogs finally broke through on a penalty corner at 19:24, as junior midfielder
Théodora Dillman blasted home her seventh goal of the season. Junior back
Katie Pieterse, the stick stopper, and senior midfielder
Imogen Davies, the inserter, assisted.
Â
Dillman was also in the middle of Yale's next scoring play, as she sent one towards the SHU goal from just inside the circle and sophomore forward
Lena Ansari deflected it in 41 seconds before halftime to send the Bulldogs into the break up 2-0. That was Ansari's sixth goal of the season.
Â
Sacred Heart got back within one on a goal by forward Kelsey Fithen at 43:18. Sophomore goalkeeper
Luanna Summer's blocker save just over a minute into the fourth quarter on midfielder Kayla Kruk helped keep the Yale lead intact, but the Pioneers took advantage of back-to-back corners less than five minutes later to tie the game. Forward Ally Frampton's goal made it 2-2.
Â
Ramsey's quick shot off a feed from junior midfielder
April Kim then put Yale back on top, and sophomore forward/midfielder
Ashley Kim (April's sister) put the game out of reach with an unassisted goal with just over a minute to play.Â
Â
Yale returns to action Saturday at Penn at 12:00 p.m.
