NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was a great way to start the 2021-22 season and play their first real game since the winter of 2020.
The offensive was clicking with seven different players hitting the net, while the defense and goaltending was in shutdown mode in Yale's 8-0 win over St. Anselm at Ingalls Rink.
Junior forward
Rebecca Vanstone scored consecutive goals 20 seconds apart and classmate
Claire Dalton added a tally and three points as 15 Bulldogs earned a point while outshooting the Hawks 59-18. They found the net four times in the first period and twice in each of the last two frames in the first ever hockey meeting of these two schools.
"I think we have a great group of forwards who are all super-fast and super-aggressive, and I think we made a lot of great plays just getting it down deep in the zone and kind of controlling the puck down there," said Yale captain
Greta Skarzynski. "It's really nice to see. We have that top line of
Claire Dalton,
Charlotte Welch and
Elle Hartje, who set the tone for everyone. They set the pace out there and it's everyone down to the first years who scored a couple goals today. It was great to see them get going."
Senior goalie
Gianna Meloni turned aside all 18 shots she faced, including eight in the final frame, to get the win in net.
"I really do think we've got some nice depth here, even though our roster is half old and have young," said
Mark Bolding, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach. "I think we are able to put some lines together, and they've worked hard the last month and a half on zone entry. They just want to compete and play so we are starting to see it."
The Bulldogs are next in action at Sacred Heart tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
