NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After three weeks away from the Yale Bowl the Bulldogs returned home and earned an Ivy League victory over Penn, 42-28. The Elis were led by sophomore quarterback
Nolan Grooms who scored four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground, in his first career start.
The win is the 50
th at Yale for
Tony Reno, Joel E. Smilow Head Coach of Football at Yale. Reno joins Carm Cozza, Jack Siedlecki, T.A.D. Jones, Jordan Olivar and Walter Camp as the only coaches to reach the 50-win mark at Yale.
"We grew a lot in the last week. I'm proud of this team and the amazing job they did all week before a team victory," said Reno. "It's a good step for us but we know every game moving forward is going to be a battle. We will continue to work each day to reach our goals."
The Bulldogs snapped a two-game skid, the first time they had accrued back-to-back losses since 2018.
Grooms led Yale in both passing and rushing as he completed 18-of-27 passes for 283 yards and added 16 carries for 113 rushing yards. He did not lose any yardage on the ground.
The second-year signal caller found classmate
Mason Tipton five times for 132 yards and a touchdown to pace the offense while senior linebacker
Micah Awodiran had a game-high 13 tackles.
The two teams swapped touchdowns to start the first quarter, but Yale scored on an eight-yard rush by Grooms to begin the second and never looked back.
Penn opened the second half with a passing touchdown to make a one score game, 28-21, but Yale answered with touchdowns on back-to-back drives to reach 42 points.
Yale's defensive line continued its strong play this season with five sacks in the contest. Junior defensive end
Reid Nickerson and sophomore defensive lineman
Clay Patterson each registered two sacks.
The defensive secondary also shown bright with seven pass breakups and an interception by junior cornerback
Dathan Hickey.
The Bulldogs will look to keep it going next week at the Yale Bowl when they welcome Columbia for a pre-Halloween showdown on Saturday, October 30 at noon.
