NEW HAVEN, Cnnn. – It was vintage Yale Basketball Tuesday night at Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs limited UAlbany to 37.3 percent shooting, won the battle of the boards 40-33 and tallied 15 assists on 23 field goals in a dominant 71-52 victory over the Great Danes.
Azar Swain led four Bulldogs in double figures with 21 points.
Matthue Cotton and
August Mahoney added 13 and
Isaiah Kelly had 11 points.
"Today we played Yale Basketball," said
James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We defended well, outrebounded them and shared the ball."
Yale (6-5) scored the first five points and led the entire game.
Matt Knowling's layup off a nifty feed from
Eze Dike had the Bulldogs in front by seven, 22-15, with seven minutes remaining in the first half. By halftime, the lead had grown to 30-19.
Yale's largest lead of the game was 25 midway through the second half.
In addition to his 13 points, Cotton grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Swain had four assists and five steals to go along with his 21 points.
Yale's defense forced 19 turnovers, which led to 17 points.
Despite the resounding win, Jones knows there is still room for improvement.
"We haven't played our best basketball yet," he said.
The Bulldogs travel to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday to face Iona in the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
