COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Yale field hockey alum and volunteer assistant
Mary Beth Beiler '13 is getting ready to play for the U.S. Women's National Team, as she is part of the team's 25 athlete traveling roster that is headed to Europe for the continuation of the 2020-21 FIH Hockey Pro League season in May. The U.S. announced the roster on Apr. 29.
The FIH Hockey Pro League includes nine teams, including all of the top six in the world rankings -- No. 1 Netherlands, No. 2 Argentina, No. 3 Germany, No. 4 Australia, No. 5 Great Britain, No. 6 New Zealand, No. 10 China, No. 12 Belgium and No. 15 the United States.
Beiler first earned a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team in November 2017, rising from the Developmental Squad. She played for the U.S. in the inaugural season of the FIH Hockey Pro League in 2019 and then earned a spot on the 2020 U.S. roster in January of 2020 after trials at Spooky Nook Sports in Pennsylvania. The league began play that month, and the U.S. played five games before the pandemic forced everyone to the sidelines.
The U.S. has four matches remaining in the season, starting with two games against Belgium at the Sportcentrum Wilrijkse Plein-Antwerp May 15-16. By then the team will have gone 438 days without a game. The team then heads to London for a two-game series against Great Britain at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre May 22-23.
Much of Beiler's international experience has come playing for the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team, including a gold-medal finish at the women's Indoor Pan American Cup in Guyana that earned the team a spot at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in 2018. Beiler also helped the team win the Indoor Hockey Can American Series in March 2016 in Toronto and played in the 4 Nations Tournament in Durban, South Africa, in December 2015.
Beiler (née Mary Beth Barham) enjoyed plenty of success during her playing career at Yale, including an Ivy League title in her junior season (2011). In her senior season Beiler was chosen second team All-Mideast Region by the NFHCA and was a first team All-Ivy League honoree. She also was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior Game and received a pair of Yale team honors: the Player of the Year Award and the Coaches Award, given to the player who exemplifies principles, direction and persistence in pursuit of field hockey excellence at Yale.
Beiler has been on the Yale staff since 2015. A native of Fairfax, Va., she is a graduate of W.T. Woodson High School and played for Capital Pegasus. She was in Jonathan Edwards College at Yale and majored in environmental studies.
