Bulldogs Fall 2-1 in OT at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. -- Midfielder/defender Lineke Spaans scored at 8:31 of the first overtime Friday night at Rappolt Field to lift Lafayette past Yale in field hockey, 2-1.

After a scoreless first half Yale (1-2, 0-0 Ivy League) fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Lafayette midfielder Ariel Schumacher just over three minutes into the third. But the Bulldogs responded immediately, with sophomore forward Lena Ansari slotting home a rebound for her second goal in as many games.

Yale held Lafayette (3-1, 0-0 Patriot League) scoreless on 11 penalty corners for the night, including one with just over two minutes left in regulation. The Bulldogs' first two possessions of overtime ended in turnovers, however, and after the second one Lafayette was able to get the ball into the circle. After the Bulldogs momentarily knocked the ball loose, Spaans recovered and fired a low, hard shot past Yale goalie Luanna Summer for the win. This was Yale's second straight one-goal loss.

Summer was credited with four saves.

"We played really well," said Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "The defensive penalty corner unit did a fantastic job, as did Lu. It was also huge for us that, 30 seconds after Lafayette scored, we went down and answered. We had a great week of practice, and the players applied what we trained. We took a good step from our last game."

Yale returns to action Saturday, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate at Johnson Field.
