Welch gets goal as Yale outshoots Harvard 21-17

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – A rough start that included a pair of penalties and two goals was too much for the No. 8 Yale Women's Hockey Team to overcome in a 3-1 loss to No. 10 Harvard.

After giving up a pair of early goals, including a 5-on-3, the visitors clawed back to cut the margin to 2-1 after one frame. Charlotte Welch flicked a backhander five-hole from the low slot for her seventh goal of the season to cut the lead in half, but the Elis could not get any closer.

Gianna Meloni, who made 15 saves in the game, was pulled for the extra skater with a little over a minute left before the Crimson found the empty net.

Yale, which outshot Harvard 21-17, beat the Crimson at New Haven by the same score earlier this season. This was the first loss for the Bulldogs since a 3-2 OT game against No. 5 Quinnipiac at the Nutmeg Classic.

The Elis next host Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
