Booker's Strike Lifts Bulldogs to Victory Over Penn

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a Laila Booker first half goal, the Yale women's soccer team took down Pennsylvania, 1-0, at Reese Stadium. With the win the Bulldogs improved to 6-5-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Ivy league, while the Quakers fell to 3-4-7 overall and 0-3-2 in the Ivy.

"I'm so happy for our group to get this shutout win today," said Sarah Martinez, The Loring Family Head Coach. "Playing at home is something we take great pride in and we continue to show that with the results we've had at Reese this year. I'm really proud of the progress we continue to make and am excited to keep growing with this group. We will enjoy this win today and look forward to hosting a very good Columbia team for our final game at home next weekend."

How It Happened
  • Penn's greatest scoring threat in the first half was 15 minutes into the game, but Marisa Shorrock made the hard stop, and the second-chance opportunity was cleared wide by the Bulldogs' defense.
  • In the 27th minute, Laila Booker made a sprinting run through the midfield and distributed the ball to Zia Makhathini on the right side. Makhathini slotted it over to Chloe Laureano who dropped it to a breaking Booker inside the box for the finish.
  • Second half action saw the Bulldogs with a few early chances and the Quakers with the late-game opportunities, but Yale's defense held strong and warded off any hope Penn had to score the equalizer.

Notes
  • Laila Booker has scored goals in back-to-back home games at Reese. Including today's goal against Penn, Booker also scored in the Bulldogs' 1-0 win over Sacred Heart on Oct. 12.
  • This is also Booker's second game-winning goal of her career.
  • Marisa Shorrock notched her fourth clean sheet in as many appearances.
  • Zia Makhathini recorded her first-career assist.
  • Chloe Laureano tallied her seventh-career assist and the second of the season.
  • It is the sixth time since 2008 that the Bulldogs have notched six wins at home in a season.
