NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A goal 54 seconds into the game proved decisive on Sunday afternoon as No. 18 UMass edged Yale 1-0 at Johnson Field.
Junior goalkeeper
Luanna Summer made four saves as the Bulldog defense held UMass scoreless for the final 59:06, including denying six UMass penalty corners. But the Minutewomen caught the Bulldogs in transition for the game's only goal, as Summer came out to challenge forward Dempsey Campbell but Campbell was able to send the ball ahead to a wide-open Ianni for the shot that wound up deciding the game.
Yale (6-6, 1-2 Ivy League) outshot the Minutewomen 9-1 in the first quarter, but three saves by UMass goalkeeper Myrte Van Herwijnen kept the Bulldogs at bay.
UMass (10-3, 3-1 Atlantic 10) had seen a five-game winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss at No. 9 Saint Joseph's Friday. Besides Yale and Saint Joe's, the only other teams that have held the Minutewomen to one goal or less this season were then-No. 1 Northwestern (4-1 Aug. 29) and then-No. 6 Iowa (2-0 Sept. 11).
The game wrapped up a challenging section of the schedule that saw Yale take on three ranked teams in a span of four games. While the Bulldogs were unable to come away with any victories against those ranked teams, they did lower their margin of defeat, and the number of shots they allowed, with each successive game. They return to action this coming Friday, hosting Columbia at 6:00 p.m.
