NEW YORK – On a cold, rainy Friday morning, over 10 grueling kilometers of racing at Van Cortlandt Park, the Yale men's cross country team battled to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
After placing fifth at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships two weeks ago, the Bulldogs were confident in their ability to compete with the best athletes in the Northeast as they toed the line at Van Cortlandt Park for the third time this season. On this occasion, over a longer than usual 10 kilometer distance, the course consisted of several short, fast laps across a mixture of grassy and rocky terrain. Many of Yale's Ivy League rivals were also in the field, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to back up, and even improve from, their performance two weeks ago.
Just like at Heps, junior Sean Kay led the way for Yale as he powered to a 19th place All-Region finish in what was perhaps one of the more competitive regional fields in recent years. This rounds out a stellar season for Kay in which he has run a 23:29 8k PR, earned All-Ivy and now All-Region honors. Friday, he finished strongly on the final lap to dip under 30 minutes with a 29:54 clocking. That time should serve as an early benchmark that he will look to build from as he begins to turn his attention to competitions on the track. If he can carry his cross country form onto the track, neither the 5000m nor 10,000m school records are out of reach.
Behind Kay, Yale demonstrated strong pack running as the Bulldogs posted an impressively low spread of just 37 seconds between their second and seventh athletes across the line. First year Owen Karas continued his scintillating upwards trajectory to close out the season with a 45th place regional finish. Karas and sophomore Leo Brewer were inseparable as they scythed through the field together during the second half of the race, both moving up at least 30 places from 4.7k to the finish. Karas placed 45th in 30:42 while Brewer finished just behind him, 48th in 30:44. Team captain Cade Brown rounded out an inspiring Yale cross country career as he finished in the same time as Brewer and came home in 50th position, his highest ever placing at this race. Throughout his four seasons Brown has been a leader for the team both on and off the course, competing in four Heps championships and three Regional Championships, and the team moves on to next year in a much better position thanks to his leadership this season.
Sophomore Varun Oberai was Yale's final scorer as he finished in 65th place in 31:03. Oberai has shown remarkable improvement this year and will now look to carry that over to a track season in which he'll be expecting to rewrite multiple PRs. Close behind him today were junior Stephen Moody and first year Kenan Pala, who, like Karas and Brewer, worked together the whole way as they powered to 76th and 79th finishes in times of 31:14 and 31:19 respectively. Their teamwork epitomizes the collective, group approach that Yale has taken to training and racing all season, and the team should feel encouraged heading into next season after clearly improving their ability to execute that strategy.
Next up for the Bulldogs is some well-earned rest to allow them to recover from a long and grueling season of cross country running. A one-place improvement from last year's result doesn't quite do today's performance justice, as Yale lowered its team score by 65 points and its average scorer's time from 31:59 to 30:37. The Bulldogs will be confident in their ability to carry that level of improvement into the upcoming track season, and beyond.
