Bulldogs Hit School Record 18 Three-Pointers, Rout Howard

Yale now 4-0 in friendly confines of Lee Amphitheater

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was another dominant night at the John J. Lee Amphitheater for the Yale men's basketball team. It was also record breaking. The Bulldogs made a school-record 18 three-pointers on their way to an 86-40 victory over Howard.

August Mahoney led the way with six treys, John Poulakidas had four, Bez Mbeng contributed three, Yassine Gharram hit two, and Michael Feinberg, Emir Buyukhanli and Devon Arlington all made one.

"That's what was available tonight, and they were catch and shoot," said James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "They were rhythm jump shots for shooters, and you certainly want to take those when you have them."

The previous record was 16 against Lyndon in 2011.

The Bulldogs were also very unselfish, finishing with 27 assists on their 31 field goals.

Yale (7-1 overall) is 4-0 on the season in the friendly confines of its historic arena with an average margin of victory of 46.8 points.

Last week against Vermont, the Bulldogs used a sensational second half to turn a close game into a rout. On this night, Yale was in total control almost from the start, building a 20-11 lead after nine minutes and increasing it to 47-23 by halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the Bulldogs outscored the Bison 39-17.

"We played two really good halves," Jones said.

Mahoney had 18 points to lead the way, one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures. Mbeng added 13 points and eight assists, Poulakidas had 12 points and EJ Jarvis contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Yale finished 18-of-41 from beyond the arc and shot 49.2 percent overall for the game.

The Bison were just 3-of-16 from long range.

Steve Settle had 14 points to pace Howard.

Perhaps the only negative on this night is Yale won't return to Lee Amphitheater until Jan. 6 against Dartmouth. The Bulldogs play their next six games on the road, starting on Saturday at Stony Brook and concluding at Columbia in the Ivy League opener on Dec. 31.

Saturday's game on Long Island is a 6:30 p.m. start and will be televised on SNY.
