HAMDEN, Conn. – An early deficit proved too big to overcome for the Yale women's basketball team Wednesday night against Quinnipiac at M&T Bank Arena. The Bulldogs fell behind by 14 in the first quarter, and the deficit ballooned to 23 late in the third. A run by Yale cut the lead to 12 twice midway through the fourth, but the Bulldogs would get no closer. QU finished with a 75-59 win. Sophomore guard
Nyla McGill provided a bright spot, registering her third double-double of the year (15 points, 13 rebounds).
Yale (4-6, 0-0 Ivy League) shot .308 in the first quarter while Quinnipiac (5-3, 0-0 MAAC) shot .600, leading to a 24-10 Bobcats advantage. The Bulldogs regrouped in the second quarter, when both teams scored 13 points. But with multiple Yale players in foul trouble, the Bobcats began pulling away again in the third. A 9-0 run made the score 55-32 with 3:32 left in the third; that would prove to be the Bobcats' largest margin of the night. Yale answered with a 9-0 run of its own from 1:01 of the third to 8:56 of the fourth to cut the lead to 57-43.
A steal and layup by first-year guard
Kiley Capstraw with 7:15 left in the fourth got Yale within 12, but after the teams traded baskets Quinnipiac went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Bobcats have now won 12 in a row at home.
McGill's 15 points were the second-most in a game this year for her (she scored 19 at Saint Joseph's). Junior guard
Elles van der Maas added 13 points and Capstraw finished with 10. Sophomore forward
Grace Thybulle had seven points and six rebounds.
Yale hosts Drexel Sunday at noon.
