NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bulldogs used a walk-off win and a combined shutout to complete a doubleheader sweep of Harvard on a historic day at George H.W. Bush '48 Field on Saturday afternoon.
Many former Bulldog players were in attendance to take part in the dedication of George H.W. Bush '48 Field, the dedication of the Jim Neil '76 Clubhouse, and to honor head coach
John Stuper, who is retiring at the conclusion of this season after leading the Bulldogs for 30 years.
Yale won game one 1-0, and took the second 6-5. With the wins, the Bulldogs improved to 20-17 overall and 10-10 in Ivy play.
Pierce Blohowiak scored on a fielder's choice in the ninth inning of game two to cap a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Crimson.
Jake Gehri had the game-winning RBI when he hit a grounder with the bases loaded and one out, and Harvard was unable to turn the double play.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the eighth.
Ben Metzner drove in
Jimmy Chatfield on a single to right, and eventually came around to score on an error.
Mason LaPlante, the team captain, delivered a RBI single in the seventh. Metzner also drove in two runs with a double in the first.
Mark Capell tossed one and 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.
In game one,
Mike Walsh and
Reid Easterly combined on a shutout for Yale.
Walsh, the Ivy League leader in strikeouts, struck out 10 over six innings and allowed three hits. Easterly came on to toss three scoreless innings to earn his fourth save.
Colton Shaw delivered the only run of the game in the second with a sac fly to score Metzner, who reached on a double. Chatfield, Gehri, and
Jake Williams also had hits in the game.
The two teams will complete the three-game series and the 2022 season tomorrow with one game. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
