PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 5 Yale men's lacrosse team was topped in the Ivy League Championship game on Sunday afternoon by No. 13 Penn, 16-9. Junior attackman
Matt Brandau scored four goals and set a new career-high with 52 on the season.
Â
The Bulldogs ran into a hot goalie as Tournament MVP Patrick Burkinshaw made 16 saves as he faced 46 total shots from the Elis.
"Congratulations to Penn as they played a heck of game. We did not have our best game today but it does not take away from what they were able to do today," said
Andy Shay, Forst Family Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse.
It was a tie game, 2-2, after the first period and a two-goal Penn advantage at the break, 6-4, but the Quakers came on with seven goals in the third quarter to take control.
Â
Yale scored the first two goals of the game on scores by Brandau and first-year
Brad Sharp, but Penn tied it up and then had the final two goals of the second quarter and scored five straight out of the break to take an 11-4 lead.
Â
The Bulldogs scored three of the next four with a goal by first-year
Carson Kuhl and two scores in 62 seconds by Brandau to make it 12-7 but Penn was able to beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter to build momentum back as they then netted the first two scores of the fourth.
Â
The Elis did not back down as Brandau and first-year
Leo Johnson combined on two Man-Up goals, the second coming with 4:02 remaining but Penn was able to keep the Bulldogs from getting any closer.
Â
Brandau finished the game with a team-high five points while Johnson chipped in three on a goal and two assists. Junior
Thomas Bragg tallied a goal and an assist to make it three Bulldogs with multi-point days.
