HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – The Yale women's eight has advanced to the semifinals of The Island Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. The Bulldogs cruised to a 2.75-length victory over the University of Washington with a winning time of 7:18.
"The eight is starting to figure it out," said
Will Porter, The Friends of YWC Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "I like the edge they raced with today. Tomorrow will be a new challenge. I know they look forward to getting in the blocks again."
The Bulldogs will race in the semifinals on Saturday, and with another victory would earn a spot in Sunday's final.
Yale's pair of
Katie King-Smith and
Lucy Edmunds faced a strong American duo from the California Rowing Club and were defeated.
The experience of racing at Henley was particularly memorable for King-Smith, who graduated Yale in May and is from Oxford, England. She was a part of the second varsity eight which won the grand final at the NCAA Championship in the spring.
"Lucy and Katie raced really well." Porter said. "I am happy for Katie to finish her career here in her home country in front of her family and friends. She goes out an NCAA champion but has impacted YWC in so many ways it is difficult to explain. Simply put, she leaves the program better than she found it. Lucy will be back for her senior year, and she is a top-level athlete."
