It was quite a weekend for Yale women's crew at the U23 World Championships on Lake Varese in Varese, Italy. Four Bulldogs captured gold medals and two earned silver.
Â
Margaret Hedeman, Sophia Hahn and
Maddie Moore all helped the United States eight to an open water victory in the final. The U.S. crew grabbed the early lead and was up by nearly two seconds over Great Britain just 500 meters into the race. By the 1,000-meter mark, the U.S. had built an eight-seat lead.
Â
"We were up at the start, which for us is kind of unexpected," Hahn told USRowing.org. "From the first heats, we knew that Great Britain was going to be really close to us. I think that really got us up and pumping. All the nerves went away, and we really came together. Then at the 1,250, we really focused on that move in practice here at the course, and we really executed it well. That was really awesome to just go down the line with so many amazing women."
Â
Christina Bourmpou, racing in a Greece pair, captured gold for the second straight U23 World Championship. Racing with Evangelia Fragkou, the two built a comfortable lead at the 1000-meter mark and easily outpaced the field. Bourmpou, who raced at the Tokyo Olympics, and Fragkou posted a World Championship record-breaking time, knocking 0.27 seconds off the previous time which had been set in 2019.
Â
In the 4- final,
Lauren Carey and
Phoebe Campbell helped Great Britain capture a silver medal. Great Britain grabbed the early lead but was overtaken by a USA four by the midway point. Â
