Bulldogs Earn Tie with Hofstra in Season Opener

Bellomo stops four shots to post shutout in goal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It may not have been the exact result it was looking for, but there is plenty to be pleased about for the Yale women's soccer team after its season opener. Maya Bellomo made four saves to post a shutout as the Bulldogs played a scoreless tie with a talented Hofstra team at Reese Stadium.

The Pride, who opened the season with a 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson last weekend, won 17 games a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"While we always want to get a win, we are happy with walking away from this game with a point," said Sarah Martinez, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "The defensive efforts we saw from our group is something we are proud of and certainly an area of growth from last fall. It's important to remember we are only on day 10 of our season and are excited to build on the piece we have."

Yale's best scoring chance came early in the second half when Tina Teik fired a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off the far post at 51:11.

Bellomo's best save came a short time later when she robbed Leah Iglesias, who found herself open right in front and fired a hard shot that Bellomo snared.

Hofstra finished with a 14-3 edge in shots but very few were high-quality opportunities.

The start of the game was delayed by 30 minutes due to a thunderstorm in the New Haven area.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they host Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. at Reese. The Bobcats are 2-0 on the young season.

"We will now shift our attention to a well-coached Quinnipiac team that has had a successful start to the season," Martinez said.
