Butcher’s Goal Gives Yale 1-0 Win vs. BU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The strong start to the 2022 season continued for the Yale women's soccer team Thursday night at Reese Stadium, as the Bulldogs topped Boston University 1-0 on a first-half goal by Alanna Butcher. Yale remains undefeated through the season's first three games.

"A gritty effort from our whole team for 90 minutes today," said Sarah Martinez, Yale's Loring Family Head Coach of Womens' Soccer. "BU is a good team that is relentless in everything they do. What is great about our team right now is they are finding ways to get results even when things aren't perfect. We have a team that believes in each other and that has been a difference in many of our results."

Butcher gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Wide open at the far post, she tapped in a cross from Belle Golden. It was Butcher's first goal of the season and Golden's second assist.

A year ago BU (2-3-0, 0-0-0 Patriot League) outshot Yale 17-6 in beating the Bulldogs 1-0, but on Thursday Yale limited the Terriers to just six shots.

With 19 minutes left, Yale goalie Maya Bellomo snatched a BU corner kick out of the air to deny one of the Terriers' last good chances. She finished with four saves and registered her second shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs are now 4-1-1 in their last six home games, dating back to last season.

"We shift our attention to Fordham as we focus on continuing to defend our home turf," said Martinez.

Yale (2-0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) hosts Fordham Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
