LAWRENCE, Kan. – After getting off to a great start this season, the Yale women's soccer team hit its first bump in the road during a three-day trip to the state of Kansas.
The Bulldogs were defeated 4-1 by Kansas on Sunday at Rock Chalk Field in the first meeting ever between the programs. They were beaten 1-0 by Kansas State on Friday.
Kansas outshot Yale 21-10 and had 12 shots on goal to five for the Bulldogs, who got their only goal in the 89
th minute from
Laila Booker. It was the first career goal for Booker, a sophomore.
Kansas (6-2) took control of the game in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 11-2 and managing seven shots on Yale goalie
Maya Bellomo (eight saves). Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (3-2-1) took only two shots with
Alanna Butcher's effort in the 19
th minute the only one Kansas goalie Melania Pasar (four saves) was forced to handle.
In the 19
th minute, the Jayhawks Kate Dreyer twirled a shot just under the crossbar on a free kick to give them the lead.
In the 28
th minute, Saige Wimes beat Bellomo with a head tap after being set up by a crossing pass near the endline to the left of the Yale goalie.
Shira Elinav beat Bellomo off a pass from Maree Shinkle in the 58
th minute and then Wimes completed the scoring with three seconds to play.
In losing to Kansas State, the Bulldogs had allowed their first goal in 218 minutes over three matches, a span that had included shutout wins over Boston University and Fordham.
The Bulldogs travel to UConn on Friday to play the Huskies at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The match begins at 7 p.m.
