ALBANY, N.Y. – The Yale field hockey team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Sunday afternoon at UAlbany, as the Great Danes topped the Bulldogs 3-0 at Alumni Turf.
UAlbany (5-2, 0-0 America East), which has won four in a row, grabbed the lead at 7:21 on a goal by forward Sophia Schoonmaker. Yale (4-2, 0-0 Ivy League) came up empty on a pair of penalty corners in the first half, and the Great Danes took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
UAlbany struck again early in the third quarter, with midfielder/forward Floor de Ruiter notching a goal at 37:45. That marked the first time in four games that Yale has allowed more than one goal.
Midfielder Alison Smisdom's tip-in goal on a penalty corner at 51:37 made the final 3-0 UAlbany. Junior goalkeeper
Luanna Summer finished with five saves for Yale.
"Going into the game we knew Albany was a tough opponent; they played well today and capitalized on their opportunities," said
Melissa Gonzalez, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "On ball we had moments as well, however we need to be disciplined around finishing. Defensively we're looking to set structure and problem-solve sooner. We are excited to get into Ivy play and feel each opponent we've played has prepared us to get better."
Yale starts Ivy League play next Friday, visiting Brown for a 4:00 p.m. game.
