Yale Game Notes

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After opening the season with a pair of road games, the Yale football team makes its 2022 debut at Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field when Howard visits on Saturday in the NAACP Harmony Classic. Kickoff is slated for noon.

For more than 10 years, the Connecticut NAACP State Conference has been organizing the classic – which this year includes marching band performances, games, vendors and more – to inspire peace, fellowship and harmony on college campuses.

Both teams are coming off impressive performances. Yale cruised to a 38-14 victory over Cornell last Saturday in Ithaca, while Howard blanked Morehouse 31-0 on Sept. 17 before a crowd of 35,042 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. in the HBCU NYC Classic.

For Yale, first year running back Joshua Pitsenberger scored three touchdowns, and the defense added five more sacks in the victory over the Big Red. Yale led 14-7 after 15 minutes and increased the advantage to 28-7 by halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was 38-7.

Quarterback Nolan Grooms was an efficient 12-of-17 for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Grooms has completed nearly 61 percent of his passes through two weeks and thrown for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He also has rushed for 113 yards.

Pitsenberger carried 17 times for 93 yards against Cornell and leads the Bulldogs with 143 yards rushing through two games. He was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week following his performance vs. the Big Red.

Defensively, defensive end Osorachukwu Ifesinachukwu had two sacks, while Hamilton Moore added six tackles, including a sack. Ifesinachukwu, who on Wednesday was named a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's prestigious 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, already has four sacks on the season.

Yale's defense has 10 sacks in two games, while the offensive line has allowed only one sack.

SCOUTING HOWARD

The Bison (1-3) are playing their fourth game of the season. They opened with a 23-13 loss to Alabama State on Aug. 27, fell to Hampton 31-28 on Sept. 3 and lost 42-20 at South Florida on Sept. 10.

In the victory over Morehouse, Howard scored all 31 points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth quarter.

Jarett Hunter is the Bison's leading rusher with 190 yards on 44 attempts. He also has added three touchdowns. Quarterback Quinton Williams has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes, has thrown for 926 yards and six touchdowns. Williams' favorite target is Antoine Murray, who has 19 receptions for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Kenny Gallop Jr. leads the team with 26 tackles.

Yale is the first of two straight Ivy League opponents for Howard, which hosts Harvard in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 15.
