NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale volleyball team aims for another winning weekend when it competes at the Syracuse Tournament this weekend. Â
The Bulldogs face Army and host Syracuse on Friday, and wrap up play with a match against Hofstra on Saturday. Friday's match versus Syracuse marks a rematch from the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Â
This marks the second straight weekend the Bulldogs will compete against a team (Syracuse) in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Last weekend, Yale faced off against Florida State.Â
The Bulldogs look to build off a 2-1 weekend at the Seminole Invitational last weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. Yale defeated the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champs Florida A&M and James Madison, the preseason favorite in the Sun Belt. Â
Gigi Barr and
Carly Diehl were both named to the all-tournament team. Barr hit .345 with 27 kills in three matches, while Diehl averaged 9.60 assists and 2.50 digs for the weekend. Â
Mila Yarich led the team with 30 kills last weekend. In addition, four Bulldogs are averaging over two kills a set - Yarich (3.00), Barr (2.70),
Cara Shultz (2.67) and
Audrey Leak (2.20). Â
On defense,
Maile Somera with 37 digs in the first three matches of the season. Barr and Shultz lead the team with three blocks each. Â
As a team, the Bulldogs hit .308 against Florida A&M in a four-set victory and .474 in the sweep of James Madison. Yale also had 18 service aces in the first seven sets of the season. Â
Scouting Army
The Black Knights (2-5) defeated UConn last weekend to wrap a two-day invitational at home. Army has already faced California, San Diego State, UC San Diego and Kansas to open the season. Paige Fixemer leads the team with 3.43 kills and 4.28 points per set. Saylor Butters leads Army with a 4.12 digs per set average.Â
Scouting Syracuse
The Orange will play their first home matches of the season this weekend after a 3-3 start on the road. Syracuse lost two of three in Orlando last weekend, including matches against Central Florida and Kansas State. Polina Shemanova and Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk lead the team in kills with 90 and 89 respectively. Â
Scouting Hofstra
The Pride defeated St. Francis-Brooklyn on Tuesday to improve to 3-5 overall this season. Prior to that game, Hofstra lost all three matches last weekend in Denver -- to Butler, Portland and Denver. Clara Bal leads the team in kills (2.90) and Sarah Pierre paces the squad with a 1.17 blocks per set average. Â
