Bulldogs Keep Ivy Tourney Hopes Alive with Another One-Goal Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Three one-goal wins in a row in Ivy League play have helped the Yale field hockey team turn its season around and remain in contention for one of four spots in the Ivy League Tournament. The latest victory came Friday night in the rain at Columbia, and sophomore forward Poppy Beales was once again the hero. Her goal with 4:22 left proved to be all that Yale needed for a 1-0 win over the Lions. The Bulldogs improve to 3-3 in Ivy League play and are now a half-game behind Princeton for fourth place in the league (the Tigers play at Dartmouth Saturday). Yale hosts Princeton in the regular season finale next Friday night.

Scoring Summary
Notes
  • Yale senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer made a kick save on a shot by forward Anabelle Brodeur shortly before halftime. That wound up being Columbia's only shot on goal for the game.
  • Columbia goalie Katie Wimmer nearly carried her team to the win with six saves. But after a penalty corner shot by junior back Colette Staadecker was knocked down, Beales corralled the rebound and sent in the game-winner with 4:22 left in regulation.
  • Beales' game-winner was her team-leading eighth goal of the year, and her third game-winner. All of her game-winners have come in the last four games.
  • Junior back Keely Comizio helped seal the win by blocking a Columbia penalty corner shot with two minutes to play.
  • Yale has won four of the last five against Columbia. Four of those games have been decided by one goal.
  • This was the fourth time in the last seven games Yale has played in the rain.
  • Cornell, Harvard and Penn have clinched spots in the Ivy League Tournament. Princeton and Yale are the two teams that remain in contention for the fourth and final spot. The Tigers are 3-2 in Ivy League play.
