Bulldogs Pick Up Crucial Road Win, Downing Cornell 2-0

Yale Punches Ticket To Ivy Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Yale men's soccer team went on the road and clinched a berth in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament with a win against Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. The Bulldogs downed the Big Red 2-0 thanks to a first half goal from Max Rogers and a back-breaking tally from Eric Lagos with time winding down in the second half.

"What a gutsy performance from the guys today, and we had good energy from the start and grew into the game," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "Most importantly, we competed for a full 90 minutes and earned a great result.  We showed incredible buy-in, togetherness and grit, which is a must for this program, and we also had a couple great plays for goals and a full team defensive effort."

Yale punched their ticket to the conference postseason tournament by earning three points in the standings, and sit atop the leaderboard tied with Penn and Harvard. Yale improves to 8-5-2 overall (3-1-2 Ivy League), while Cornell falls to 8-4-2 overall (2-2-2 Ivy League) with one regular season game remaining for each team.

How It Happened
  • 28' | GOAL! Quanah Brayboy plays the ball into the Cornell defensive end. He dishes to Rogers who skirts by a pair of defenders. Just outside the 18, Rogers sends a left-footed shot into the low-left corner of the goal to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
  • HT | The Bulldogs played stifling defensive throughout the first 45, not allowing a single shot on goal.
  • 60' | The Big Red earn their best opportunity of the game with an attempt in the box, but the shot is saved by Yale goaltender Chris Edwards who knocks it over the crossbar.
  • 79' | Rogers nearly adds his second goal of the game, but his attempt is barely snuffed out by Cornell's goaltender.
  • 84' | Lagos fends off a defender and strikes with a right-footed shot to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Brayboy was credited with the assist following a fantastic setup pass.
