PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Yale men's soccer team is moving on the the inaugural Ivy League Championship game. The Bulldogs came out swinging on Friday afternoon, taking down their archrival Harvard 4-0 at Penn. Following a score from
Eric Lagos in the first half, Yale never looked back, tallying three second half goals to put an exclamation point on an emphatic win.
Yale entered the game as the third seed in the conference tournament, while Harvard were seeded second. The two teams squared off earlier in the season in a game in which the Crimson topped the Bulldogs 3-1 on its home field. The Elis got revenge on their rivals by knocking them out of the first-ever Ivy League Tournament and putting themselves only one win away from a conference title and a guaranteed spot in the NCAA Tournament.Â
"This was a really complete performance and I am very proud of the entire group for their focus, discipline and intelligence in this game," said
Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We felt like we deserved much more from the first game with Harvard so we certainly had that on our mind, but the difference is always finishing chances, and we did that today, because we won the midfield battle and executed the game plan at a high level."
How It Happened
- 23' | GOAL! Sam Harshe moved the ball upfield and directed a long pass to Lagos in the box. The senior rose above a Harvard defender and got a clean head on the ball. The shot was directed to the top left corner of the net, well out of the reach of Crimson keeper, Lucian Wood.
- HT | The Bulldogs dominated possession throughout the first 45, controlling the ball for the majority of the half. Yale didn't allow a single shot on goal in the first.
- 56' | GOAL! Lagos scores his second tally of the game. After heading a shot on net, the ball was saved by Wood and deflected toward the sideline. Quanah Brayboy collected the ball and centered it back into the box for Lagos who capitalized on his second header of the possession, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
- 59' | GOAL! Just over three minutes later, Brayboy once again got involved in the action. Following a superb ground cross from Max Rogers, Brayboy had an open look on net. His right-footed shot was barely saved by a diving Wood. But Brayboy pounced on the rebound and put it in the back of the net for Yale's third score of the game.
- 78' | GOAL! The Bulldogs tallied their fourth goal of the game on a rebound score by defender Jamie Orson. Yasin Aly dribbled into the box and put a shot on goal, but once again Wood could not corral the ball after a save. Orson raced in and tapped home the loose ball to complete an emphatic 4-0 win.
