Rogers' Miracle Goal Lifts Yale Over Bryant In NCAA First Round

Bulldogs pick up first NCAA Tournament win since 1999

Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- With less than two minutes remaining in regulation in a scoreless first round of the NCAA Tournament, Yale midfielder Max Rogers unleashed a shot from midfield, directing it over the head of the opposing goaltender and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. Rogers' unbelievable strike propelled the Yale Bulldogs (11-5-3 overall) to a 1-0 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs (16-2-2 overall) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The 1-0 victory was the first for the Elis in an NCAA Tournament game since a win over Rutgers in 1999. The Bulldogs advance to the NCAA Second Round for only the fifth time in program history. Yale is set to matchup with No. 14 Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 19 in Hempstead, N.Y.

How it Happened
  • 13' | Bryant has the first opportunity of the game with a shot from inside the box, but Yale goalkeeper Chris Edwards makes a fantastic save to keep the hosts off the board.
  • HT | It was an evenly matched affair throughout the first 45 minutes. The two teams combined for only five shots on goal, resulting in a defensive stalemate.
  • 68' | Quanah Brayboy has the best look of the match, but his shot misses the crossbar by inches.
  • 71' | Edwards comes out of the net to make a great play, thwarting an opportunity for Bryant.
  • 89' | From midfield, Rogers notices that the Bryant keeper was far off his line. The Yale midfielder boots it without hesitation with his left foot. The trajectory of the ball sends it over the keepers head and out of reach. The shocking strike gives the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory.
