Bulldogs' Magical Postseason Run Ends In NCAA Second Round

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Yale men's soccer team gave it all they had in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Bulldogs' magical postseason run came to an end on Sunday evening in Hempstead, N.Y.

Yale fell to No. 14 Hofstra 2-0 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium ending the Bulldogs' historic campaign. With the victory, the Pride will play the University of North Carolina in the Sweet 16 of the postseason tournament.

The 2023 Elis were one of the most successful teams in program history, finishing the season with an 11-6-3 record and an Ivy League Tournament title. Yale also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999, defeating Bryant 1-0 last weekend in the first round.

How it Happened
  • 26' | Eric Lagos is brought down on the edge of the 18 in an apparent foul by a Pride defender, but the referees ruled a foul on the Bulldogs forward, eliminating an excellent opportunity for the visitors.
  • 37' | Ryan Carmichael gets the Pride on the board, scoring on a rebound and putting the hosts up 1-0.
  • HT | Hofstra held the edge in shots over the Bulldogs 7-3, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the second half.
  • 67' | The Pride adds their second goal of the game to go up 2-0.
  • 76' | Following a cross on a free kick from Max Rogers, TJ Presthus soars above the Hofstra defense and heads the ball towards the net. The ball is struck well, but it clangs off the crossbar and is cleared away by the goalkeeper.
  • FT | Despite a full, 90-minute effort from the Bulldogs, the visitors fell to Hofstra 2-0.
From Coach Stannard
"First of all, I want to thank our seniors for helping lead this group to one of the best seasons in program history. They have endured a lot after winning an Ivy Championship in 2019 and then dealing with the huge setbacks of the COVID pandemic and not being together in person for over a year," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "They have been very resilient, which is a huge part of who we are as a program. Their leadership to bring a togetherness in the group this year has been special to be part of.  We talk about leaving the jersey in a better place, which is a high standard for this program, but they absolutely achieved that over the past year."

"For the entire group, I am so grateful to all of them for their trust and buy-in," said Stannard. "It is amazing what a group can accomplish when they are working together for something bigger than themselves. Team 116 will be in the history books forever and every player, coach, and support staff played a huge part in making it happen." "Congratulations to Hofstra on a well played match and best of luck to them in the next round."
