NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was another championship season for the Yale football team, and 14 Bulldogs who helped pave the way to the title have earned All-Ivy recognition.
Offensive linemen
Kiran Amegadjie and
Jonathan Mendoza, quarterback
Nolan Grooms, receiver
Mason Tipton, defensive lineman
Clay Patterson, linebacker
Joseph Vaughn and defensive back
Wande Owens all earned first team recognition. Running back
Joshua Pitsenberger and tight end
Jackson Hawes were named to the second team and offensive lineman
Michael Bennett, defensive lineman
Alvin Gulley, Jr., linebacker
Hamilton Moore and defensive back
Sean Guyton each were honorable mention selections. In addition, offensive lineman
Jonathon Durand was selected Academic All-Ivy.
Amegadjie, Grooms, Patterson, and Owens all earned first team All-Ivy recognition for the second time in their outstanding careers.
Honorees Amegadjie, Mendoza, Bennett and Durand were part of an offensive line that helped the Bulldogs finish second in the league in scoring offense (29.9 ppg.).
Grooms, the 2022 Ivy Offensive Player of the Year, led the league in passing touchdowns (22) and efficiency (149.6) and also was fifth in rushing yards (588).
Tipton, a unanimous first team selection, led the league with 10 touchdown receptions and was third in receiving yards (786).
Patterson finished with 4.5 sacks, which was fourth in the league.
Vaughn, a two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, was second in the league in tackles for loss and led the team with 88 total tackles.
Owens, who has earned All-Ivy recognition in each of the last three seasons, was second on the team in tackles (55) and also made one of the biggest plays of the season, knocking away a pass on fourth down in the second overtime of Yale's win over Princeton.
Pitsenberger tied for second in the league with eight rushing touchdowns, despite missing two games due to injury.
Hawes earned second team recognition for the second straight season.
Gulley was a force in the interior of the defensive line, finishing with 24 tackles and two pass break ups.
Moore was third on the team with 51 tackles and also had two interceptions.
Guyton, who missed the first three games of the season due to injury, contributed a pair of interceptions, including one he returned 70 yards for a touchdown against Dartmouth.
It was another memorable season for the Bulldogs, who won seven of their final eight games to finish 7-3 overall and 5-2 in Ivy play. Yale has now won Ivy titles in four of the last six seasons. It is the 18th Ivy League championship in the illustrious history of the program.
The 2023 Asa S. Bushnell Cup Presentation, honoring the Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will take place on Monday, Dec. 11, at the famed New York Athletic Club. The Bushnell Cup finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
