Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Sam Rubin

Furious Comeback Falls Short at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – The Yale women's basketball team nearly rallied from a 22 point deficit Tuesday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center against San Francisco. The Bulldogs cut that deficit to eight midway through the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback. USF went on to pull away again for a 75-59 win. Sophomore guard Kiley Capstraw had 20 points and junior guard Nyla McGill added 17 and five steals.

Coming off a hard-fought 66-59 loss at Pacific Monday in which the Bulldogs led by eight with 8:45 to play but could not hold on to for the win, Yale (0-6, 0-0 Ivy League) started slowly on Tuesday. San Francisco (2-4, 0-0 WCC) shot a blistering 83 percent in the first quarter, hitting five of six three-point attempts, to take an early 24-9 lead.

The Dons increased their lead to as many as 22 in the second before the Bulldogs battled back to trim the deficit to 15 at halftime, 40-25.

McGill almost single-handedly got Yale back in the game in the third quarter, scoring 13 points and adding three steals in the quarter. But the Bulldogs could not get the deficit to any less than 11. They also dealt with foul trouble, as senior point guard Jenna Clark picked up her fourth foul with 4:43 left in the quarter. After a layup by senior forward Brenna McDonald in the waning seconds of the quarter, Yale entered the fourth trailing 61-50.

A three-pointer by sophomore guard Kiley Capstraw with 7:30 to play brought Yale within nine, 63-54, and prompted a timeout by USF. The Bulldogs would eventually get within eight and had a chance to cut the deficit to five, but after a missed Yale three-pointer USF went on a 6-0 run that quelled any chances of a Bulldog comeback.

Notes
  • Clark finished with eight points and a team-best five assists.
  • Capstraw and McDonald tied for the team lead in rebounds with five.
