Townsend's Career Game Lifts Bulldogs Over Stony Brook

Sophomore logs first collegiate double-double

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Nick Townsend recorded a career-high 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Yale men's basketball team to a 79-71 victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday night at John J. Lee Amphitheater. Townsend pulled down seven offensive boards and went 10-of-10 at the line in Yale's first home game in nearly a month.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 5-3, while the Seawolves fall to 2-4.

Following a back-and-forth first half, the Bulldogs started to pull away in the second, but the Seawolves continued to stick around, cutting the hosts' lead to 69-63 with just over five minutes left to play. But back-to-back buckets from Townsend helped push the lead to double digits once again, and the deficit was too much for the Seawolves to overcome. Yale now holds a 4-1 record all-time against Stony Brook.

SUPER SOPHOMORE
Townsend had his best game as a Bulldog, leading all players in both points and rebounds to earn his first collegiate double-double. Prior to Wednesday's contest, the sophomore had career highs of 15 and seven in points and rebounds, respectively. Against the Seawolves, Townsend collected 15 boards, the most by a Bulldog in a single game since 2019. Townsend was 6-of-13 from the field and was perfect from the stripe, burying all 10 free-throw attempts.

KEY STAT
The Bulldogs grabbed 18 offensive rebounds including a combined 12 from Townsend and Danny Wolf. Yale scored 22 second chance points compared to only nine for the Seawolves.

LEADING SCORERS
In addition to Townsend, the Bulldogs had three other players who reached double figures in scoring. Bez Mbeng tallied 18 while knocking down four shots from three-point range. Wolf and John Poulakidas scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

For Stony Brook, Dean Noll and Tyler Stephenson-Moore each recorded 16 points.

QUOTING JONES
"Nick is a tremendous player and a workhorse, and I think we lost the Rhode Island game because we got out-toughed," said James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We did not get out-toughed tonight, and Nick was a big part of that."

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bulldogs will hit the road once again, and will take on Vermont in non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
