STONY BROOK, N.Y. – For the second time in 19 days, Yale women's basketball senior guard
Jenna Clark established a new career high in points – but that was not enough for the win, as the Bulldogs fell 81-66 at Stony Brook Wednesday afternoon at Island Federal Arena. Clark had 26 points – one more than her previous high set Nov. 17 at Lehigh – and added five assists.
Yale (2-8, 0-0 Ivy League) held a 9-8 lead after a three-pointer by Clark at 4:28 of the first, but the Seawolves scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 15-9 lead into the second.
The Bulldogs got within three on a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Kiley Capstraw at 9:31 of the second, and again on a layup by Clark at 7:36, but Stony Brook went on a 12-4 run to start building its lead. A three-pointer by sophomore guard
Lola Lesmond pulled Yale within eight with 1:13 left, but the Seawolves made three layups in the final minute to go into halftime up by 10, 39-29.
Clark did some of her best work in the third quarter, hitting five of her six shots – including a three pointer – and scoring 12 points to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Yale got within four on four occasions, but each time Stony Brook (7-1, 0-0 CAA) answered to keep the Bulldogs from getting any closer.
Foul trouble started to catch up to Yale in the third. Junior guard
Nyla McGill left after getting her third foul at 5:42 of the third; then, after coming back in at 2:39, she picked up her fourth foul at 1:05 and left again. Senior forward
Brenna McDonald and junior guard/forward
Mackenzie Egger would each get to four fouls as well.
Yale closed within three with 8:12 to play on a McDonald layup, but a 13-2 run by the Seawolves effectively put the game out of reach.
