Hot Shooting from Downtown Lifts Penn Past Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two of Yale's best defensive efforts against the three pointer had come in the last three games heading into Friday night. Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs held Harvard to a 3-for-16 (.188) performance on three-point attempts and last Saturday they held Columbia to a 6-for-21 (.286) performance. Penn bucked that trend in a big way Friday at Lee Amphitheater, though, shooting .500 from downtown (9-for-18) to earn a critical 72-58 win over the Bulldogs that keeps the Quakers within one game of first place in the Ivy League standings. Yale was led by 14 points from junior guard Jenna Clark and 13 points from sophomore guard Christen McCann.

The chief culprit in Penn's three-point attack was guard Kayla Padilla, who hit five of her nine attempts en route to scoring 25 points on the night.

Yale (11-13, 5-6 Ivy League) trailed by as many as 14 in the second quarter but closed to within seven by the end of the first half thanks to a three-pointer from Clark shortly before the buzzer. Clark's three was one of two in the final 2:24 of the first half for her.

Penn pulled away in the third quarter, though, outscoring Yale 28-14 to take a commanding 57-36 lead. Four of Penn's nine threes on the night came in the third, and Padilla was one of four players who accounted for those.

Yale outscored Penn (16-8, 8-3 Ivy League) 22-15 in the fourth but it was not enough for a comeback. The Bulldogs remain in fifth place in the league standings, two games behind fourth-place Harvard with three games remaining.

Clark finished with six assists and no turnovers. McCann was one of three players with a team-high eight rebounds, joined by junior forward Brenna McDonald and sophomore guard Nyla McGill. Junior guard Klara Astrom added 11 points for Yale, including a pair of three-pointers.

Yale hosts Princeton, which beat Brown 80-37 Friday to remain tied for first with Columbia, Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
